How did your labor start?
It started with gas-like pains, I didn’t know I was actually in labor until I recognized the pains as a steady pattern.
How did your labor go? How did you feel during labor?
My labor went very quickly. In total I was in labor for 12 hours. I didn’t know I was in labor until I reached active labor, which was from 8pm until I gave birth at 1:47am. I felt very focused. I was breathing through each contraction, taking it one contraction at a time.
Who was with you and how did they offer support?
My boyfriend, Brooks was with me the whole time. He supported me by applying counter pressure (hip squeezes) for every contraction I faced. I could not have done it without him. He provided calm, verbal support as well. My labor went by so quickly that we had to have my mom meet us at the Coit House.
What was it like to meet your baby?
My baby was crowning in the parking lot of our apartment building. We live 2 minutes away from the Coit House (thank God). By the time we got to the Coit House, I stepped out of the car and my baby came out while I was standing. My boyfriend was behind me and caught him! Since they were both behind me as we walked into the Coit House, I didn’t come face to face with my baby until we laid in the bed in one of the birthing rooms. I felt so relieved and accomplished. Maura placed my baby on my chest once I laid down and I felt whole and peaceful. It was the best feeling in the world.
How did your experience of giving birth compare to your expectations?
My birth was the complete opposite of what I was expecting! I envisioned a peaceful, quiet labor in the birthing tub at the Coit House. My labor was also way quicker than I was expecting for having my first baby. Even though it was crazy and not was I was expecting, I wouldn’t change a thing. My baby and I both came out on the other side healthy and happy. And now I have a fun story to tell!
What were the first few weeks with a newborn like for you?
So peaceful, warm and loving. We had a few close visitors the first few days. Our parents brought us meals and groceries which was so helpful. But, nothing beat just the 3 of us enjoying our time as a new family. My baby is now 8 months old and when I look back at the newborn bubble, those days are so nostalgic.
Is there anything else you want to share?
As someone who was always so nervous and scared to give birth, it was the best thing me and body have ever been through! The female body is 100x stronger than we know. Never doubt yourself and know that you can do anything. Focus on breathing and take every second one at a time. Women are amazing.
