The birth assistants at The Coit House passionately support and guide birthing persons and their families through the delivery process.

Full-time Staff RN (she/her)

Ashley has proudly been working in the Buffalo area as a registered nurse since 2012 and recieved her Bachelors Degree in Nursing from Daemen College.

Ashley, herself, has a passion for patient advocacy and research. She completed a birth doula (DONA) course that sparked her transition to work locally in Labor and Delivery at a near by hospital. She then began her journey with Fika Midwifery in the fall of 2019.

Ashley has a strong drive to approach birth as a whole, ensuring mind, body, and soul are balanced. You can find her recommending essential oils to her patients and striving to make sure mom feels safe and encouraged. When she’s not witnessing birth, she’s usually chasing around her husband to help with home renovations.

Kait knew from a very young age her dream was to become a Registered Nurse, specifically caring for mothers and babies. She is extremely passionate about what she does as a birth assistant at The Coit House. She graduated nursing school in 2012 and went on to receive her Bachelors in Science degree at Empire State College. She has worked on a mother-baby unit at a local hospital since 2009 and has been a midwife assistant at Fika Midwifery since the beginning.

Kait is an experienced and skilled newborn nurse certified in the neonatal resuscitation (NRP) and as a certified lactation consultant (CLC). She believes in low intervention birth and enjoys assisting in home birth, where women are able to decide how their birth story will go, with the guidance of a Midwife and a team who all truly believe in the midwifery model of care. You may see Kait at your home birth, postpartum home visit, or assisting at group prenatal care.

Kait lives in the Southtowns with her husband Jesse and two golden-doodles, Brody and Nori. When not attending birth or caring for families, she loves to travel, spend time with her family and friends, and try new craft beer.

Isobel is a medical-surgical nurse in Buffalo after graduating in 2021 from the University at Buffalo.

She is drawn to midwifery by its dedication to physiologic birth and the holistic model of care. She is an advocate for all birthing bodies and their right to access evidence-based information to choose the best care for their family. For her, the glowing joy of helping bring new life into this world never fades.

Isobel has spent two summers shadowing the midwives at Fika in the office and at births before becoming a birth assistant.

She is a Certified Lactation Counselor and is always pursuing continuing education in this field of work.

She is a Buffalo transplant, coming originally from Michigan on athletic and academic scholarships to UB. She was a member of the University at Buffalo’s Swimming and Diving team, winning a conference championship her senior year.

Iva Blackburn is a Licensed Practical Nurse who helps children and their families receive medical care in the comfort of their own homes.

Iva received her Bachelors Degree in Biology from Bethune Cookman University. Following the alma mater of BCU “Enter to Learn, Depart to Serve” she loves giving back to the WNY community she was born and raised in.

Iva is the mother of 3 (Jessie, Zuri and Anina). The care she received during each of her pregnancies lead her on the path of advocacy and autonomy. “Every mother and family has the right to receive the care that they desire.”

Iva is currently working on her DONA and Lamaze International certifications and looks forward to helping the women and families in her WNY community.

Angela received a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing from Daemen College and has been working as a Registered Nurse since 2013, currently in an Emergency Department.

Angela has 2 children, both born under midwifery care. After the birth of her first baby, she became interested in working with birthing women and is excited to support and empower them during their transition into motherhood.

Having experienced both a cesarean and natural birth, she is eager to assist in births, encourage women and instill confidence. She would like to further her education in midwifery in the future.
